US capital-gains example
This lesson example covers US federal capital-gains rules for individuals. Holding shares more than one year generally makes a gain long term; one year or less generally makes it short term. Ordinary net long-term gains can use 0%, 15% or 20% rates, while special rates and additional taxes may apply. Other jurisdictions and account types have different rules.
Check the current sources and the tax year: IRS Topic 409: Capital gains and losses; IRS Publication 550: Investment income and expenses.
