MACD Indicator Explained: How to Read It, With Examples
Moving Average Convergence/Divergence, or MACD, compares two exponential moving averages of past prices. Its lines and histogram describe changing momentum; they cannot establish the next price direction.
Quick answer
What do the MACD lines show?
The MACD line is the difference between a faster and slower exponential moving average. A signal line smooths the MACD line, and a histogram shows their difference. A crossover says the calculated relationship changed, not that a trade is certain to work.
How is a common MACD setting constructed?
A common setup subtracts a 26-period exponential moving average from a 12-period one, then applies a 9-period EMA to the MACD line for the signal line. These are settings, not universal rules. The chart interval and price input must be recorded with the result.
What does a signal-line cross mean?
It means the MACD line moved from one side of its smoothed signal line to the other. In a sideways market the lines can cross repeatedly. Check the underlying price chart and the sequence of dates rather than treating each cross as a buy or sell command.
How do the zero line and histogram help?
The zero line marks where the two selected price EMAs are equal. A positive or negative histogram marks which side of the signal line MACD occupies and by how much. A shrinking bar describes a narrowing gap; it does not guarantee a change in price trend.
What is MACD divergence?
A chart reader may compare a new price high or low with the MACD reading at the same dates. If they differ, recent momentum has changed under the formula. Divergence can persist or fail. Describe the dates and settings before making any inference.
What are the limits of this indicator?
MACD is built from past prices and can react after a move has begun. Repeated crosses in a range can generate many false leads; frequent trading adds costs and may miss recoveries.
A real-data MACD calculation: March 20, 2020
Sources: FRED: S&P 500 daily closing observations (S&P Dow Jones Indices data); Fidelity: MACD calculation. Prices checked October 8, 2026. Calculations below use these dated observations, not invented prices. The index series excludes dividends.
Use the 34 trading-day closes from February 3 through March 20, 2020. Here each price EMA starts with the simple average of its first 12 or 26 observations, then uses EMA = current close × 2/(period + 1) + previous EMA × (1 − 2/(period + 1)). The first nine available MACD readings initialize the signal line. These explicit starting choices make the exercise reproducible; a chart with earlier price history can differ.

| Initial 9-reading signal = sum of nine MACD readings / 9 | -224.5419 |
| Histogram = MACD − signal | -38.4064 |
The negative MACD means the shorter EMA is below the longer EMA. The negative histogram means MACD is below the signal value in this exercise. A crossover requires comparing two consecutive readings; this first signal value alone cannot establish one. Neither result guarantees a future direction.
Key takeaways
- MACD subtracts the longer price EMA from the shorter EMA; the signal smooths MACD.
- A histogram measures MACD minus its signal, not an assured future return.
- Use consistent settings and enough price history; one reading cannot prove a crossover.

1. What is the MACD line based on?
A. Two exponential moving averages. B. The balance sheet. C. The current dividend alone.
Show answer and feedback
A. A common MACD line subtracts a slower EMA from a faster EMA.
2. What does the histogram display?
A. Guaranteed profit. B. The difference between MACD and its signal line. C. Share volume.
Show answer and feedback
B. The histogram plots that calculated gap.
3. What can repeated crosses in a range show?
A. Certain future direction. B. A company’s fair value. C. Unstable signals in sideways price movement.
Show answer and feedback
C. The lines may switch order repeatedly without a lasting trend.
Why question: Why might a MACD crossover appear after price has already moved?
Show a sample explanation
Both EMAs and the signal line smooth historical prices, so they respond with delay to a new move.
Observe AAPL with this indicator
Open StockEducation’s chart tool with AAPL loaded. Open the AAPL chart and, if MACD is available, use a daily view and record the dates of one MACD/signal-line crossover and the preceding price move. If the tool lacks MACD, compare short and long price windows and explain why smoothing can lag. Note the settings you used.
