Trading Signal: Support & Resistance Lines

Module 4 · Company Management · Lesson 8

How Traders Read Support and Resistance

Support and resistance describe areas where a price has previously paused or changed direction. Learn to mark those areas on a chart without treating them as certain boundaries.

Quick answer

What are support and resistance?

Support is an approximate lower price area where declines have previously paused. Resistance is an approximate upper area where advances have previously paused. They are observations about a chosen chart period, not promises that the next price move will stop or reverse there.

How do you mark a possible support area?

Choose a chart interval and period, then look for two or more past lows around a similar price. Mark a zone broad enough to include ordinary variation rather than insisting on one exact number. Check the dates and whether a stock split adjustment changed the historical scale. A later price can move through a former support area.

How do you mark a possible resistance area?

Look for past highs around a similar area during the same selected period. The area may reflect where advances previously slowed. It does not reveal why investors traded there or whether a future advance will pause. Company news or wider market changes may make the earlier area less relevant.

What is a range?

If price has moved repeatedly between approximate lower and upper areas, describe the observed range. The dated example below examines a possible price area using real closing observations. A new price outside the range may continue, reverse, or return inside it.

What does a move beyond an old area mean?

A move above a former resistance area or below former support records that the old pattern changed during that interval. Some traders call this a breakout or breakdown. Neither label confirms the next direction: brief moves can reverse, and price may retest the area. Compare several intervals and the company’s current information before interpreting the move.

Can an old level change its role?

After price moves beyond a prior area, later trading may pause near that area from the other side. This is sometimes called role reversal. It is one possible description of later price history, not a rule that must occur. Mark the time frame and dates so someone else can understand the observation.

What are the limits of these chart areas?

Different people may draw different zones on the same chart, especially when the time frame changes. A level cannot explain business fundamentals or guarantee a trade result. Frequent trading based on expected short moves can add costs and risk. Treat support and resistance as chart vocabulary, then research the company and your own investment needs separately.

A real closing-price area that did not hold

Nearby closing levels and the subsequent move

The January 31 and February 24 closes were near 3,225 points. A reader might mark that as a possible closing-price area to investigate, rather than an exact floor. On February 25 the index closed at 3,128.21, below both observations. Two nearby closes alone do not prove that buying pressure created support, and they do not establish intraday lows. Inspect the intervening chart before naming a support zone; this example shows why a drawn level is a hypothesis that can fail.

Key takeaways

  • Support and resistance are approximate observations tied to a selected chart.
  • Two nearby closes do not establish the cause of a price area.
  • Prices can move beyond a marked area; it is not a guaranteed boundary.

Check your understanding

1. What is a possible support area?
A. A price zone where declines previously paused. B. A guaranteed price floor. C. A company’s annual profit.

Show answer and feedback

A. Support describes earlier trading and may fail to hold later.

2. Why mark a zone rather than one exact price?
A. Past turns often occur around an area, not one identical number. B. It guarantees the next reversal. C. It removes the need to check dates.

Show answer and feedback

A. An approximate zone can represent several nearby past lows or highs.

3. Price rises above a former resistance area. What does that prove?
A. It must keep rising. B. It moved beyond an old area in the observed interval, but may reverse. C. All investors should buy.

Show answer and feedback

B. A historical move beyond an area does not establish the next price.

Why question: Why might two chart periods produce different support areas for the same stock?

Show a sample explanation

Each period includes different highs and lows. A recent one-month range may be much narrower than a multi-year range.

Mark two observed areas on AAPL

Open the StockEducation chart tool with AAPL loaded on a daily interval. Choose a six-month view and note two similar past lows and two similar past highs, with dates. Mark approximate support and resistance zones in your notes. Widen the period to one year and record whether those zones still describe the chart. This is an observation task, not a trade signal.
