Why we built the learning path

“How do I learn all of this in one place?”

Learning investing often means moving between books, videos and company information. A module list can help you choose a starting point and connect related topics.

The path groups learning resources from foundations through company analysis, valuation, psychology, macroeconomics and tax. It is a guide, rather than a complete investing curriculum. Topic coverage and supporting resources are still being developed.

Learning path FAQ

Where should a complete beginner start learning to invest?

Start with the vocabulary and the mechanics, not with stock picks. The StockEducation learning path begins in Module 1 with what a share actually is, beginner questions, types of investing and compound growth. The glossary is a separate reference resource. Only after that does it move to reading charts, placing orders, building a portfolio and analyzing companies. Everything is free, needs no experience and no money, and a free account saves your place.

What order should I learn investing in?

Learn the ideas in the order they depend on each other: foundations and vocabulary, then how markets work, then portfolio thinking (diversification, time horizons, inflation), then how a business makes money, then reading its financial statements, then ratios and comparison, then charts and risk controls, then valuation and value investing, then psychology, and finally macroeconomics and tax. The ten modules offer this as a suggested sequence. Revisit earlier topics when helpful.

How long does it take to learn investing?

Learning time varies with your experience, practice and the material you choose. The planner on this page uses 188 module items at 7.5 minutes each as a rough planning assumption; it does not measure the time needed to understand investing or complete all videos, tools and practice. Set a manageable pace and revisit topics when needed.

Can I teach myself investing for free?

Yes. StockEducation provides free lessons and learning resources grouped into ten modules, with links to quizzes, book summaries, videos and educational tools. A free account saves course progress. The path is still being developed and does not cover every investing topic.

Is investing hard to learn?

Start with vocabulary and market mechanics, then practice reading company information and thinking about risk. The module list offers a suggested sequence; revisit earlier ideas and use reliable sources when you need more detail. Quizzes can help you identify topics to practice further.

Do I need money to start the learning path?

No. The course never asks you to invest real money. Every lesson, tool and quiz is free, and the stock market simulator gives you $1,000,000 of virtual cash to practice buying and selling real US stocks with real market data. Module 3 uses it for paper trading practice so you can test diversification and holding periods with nothing at stake. What you do with real money afterwards is your own decision; StockEducation is education only.

What will I be able to do after the 10 modules?

The modules introduce market mechanics, portfolios, businesses, financial statements, ratios, charts, valuation, psychology, macroeconomics and tax. They offer a starting point for practice and independent research. Completing the path does not guarantee investing proficiency or financial results.

Who designed the learning path, and why this order?

StockEducation groups the listed resources into ten modules, moving from vocabulary and market mechanics to portfolios, company analysis, valuation, psychology, macroeconomics and tax. Felix La Spina is the publisher and curriculum designer; Associate Professor Charles Lo, CPA, PhD is the Academic Reviewer. See the editorial standards for the responsibilities of each role.

Will StockEducation tell me which stocks to buy?

No. StockEducation is education only and never gives buy or sell recommendations, stock tips or personalized financial advice. The learning path introduces ways to examine companies, prices and risks using current primary sources. If you want personal advice, speak to a licensed financial advisor in your country.
