Syllabus FAQ

Investing Course: Common Questions

What does the free investing course cover?

Ten modules, in this order: 1. Foundations: Ownership, Growth and Safety; 2. How the Stock Market Works; 3. Build a Simple Portfolio; 4. Your Long Term Plan and Your Own Biases; 5. Read the Financial Statements; 6. Understand a Business; 7. Ratios and Comparing Companies; 8. Valuation and Investment Strategy; 9. Markets, Crowds and the Economy; 10. Charts and Trading: Know the Limits. Each module mixes lessons with video tutorials, tools and calculators, book summaries and investor profiles, and 7 of the 10 modules include a quiz (Modules 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10).

How long does the investing course take?

About nine weeks at 30 minutes a day if you complete all 242 course entries, at roughly 7.5 minutes each. Focus on the core lessons and quizzes and it is quicker. Use the pace planner on this page for a finish date that fits your schedule.

Is the investing course really free?

Yes. Every lesson, quiz, tool and the $1M practice simulator is free, with no card and nothing to cancel. AI tools have daily allowances that vary by tool.

Do I need any experience to start?

No. Module 1 starts with what a stock is and builds from there, so complete beginners can follow it. If you already know the basics, use the topic search to jump to the module you need.

How many lessons are in the course?

The course has 200+ lessons and resources: 242 course entries across 10 modules, in a set order. That is 82 lessons (including 30 analysis lessons and 20 trading lessons), 11 quizzes, 15 video tutorials, 50+ tools and calculators, 42 book summaries, 30 investor profiles and 4 library collections. Your learning dashboard tracks progress and is not counted as a lesson.

Do I need an account to take the course?

Not to start: Lesson 1 opens without one. A free account saves your progress and quiz scores, counts every entry toward course completion and unlocks the $1,000,000 practice simulator. It needs no card.

What should I learn first about investing?

Start with how shares, markets and orders work, then how to build a diversified portfolio. Next, learn to judge a business and read its financial statements, and only then move on to ratios, charts and valuation. This syllabus follows that order, so each module builds on the one before.

Can I learn investing on my own?

Yes, if you follow a structured order. Start with the basics, work through the modules in sequence, check yourself with the quizzes and practice in the free simulator before you use real money. When a word stops you, the glossary and the AI assistant explain it in simple terms.

Who created the course?

The StockEducation team. The team writes, fact checks and approves the lessons together, and current AI models help check them. Associate Professor Charles Lo, CPA, PhD, Executive Dean at Wentworth Institute of Higher Education, is the academic reviewer for the lessons, including valuation. Tax and legal topics go to a specialist.

Will the course tell me what to invest in?

No. StockEducation gives no stock tips, personal advice or promised returns. The course teaches you how to evaluate investments yourself, so you can make your own decisions.
